Ice Fishing has been good!!!

Though I haven't been able to spend as much time on the ice this winter as I have in years past, over the past couple of months when I have been out, the fishing has been awesome!  We've had good bites for walleye, crappie, pike and lake trout, even a good shore lunch or two mixed in.

The crappie fishing has been really good this winter, a result of my friends and I working hard to find new places to fish and groups of crappies that have not been pressured by other anglers.  This past weekend, along with my wife August and my friends Jamie Bruce, Sean McAughey and Ashley Haines we experienced some of the best crappie fishing I have ever seen, with a number of big fish in the 14.5"-15" range - SLABS!

Aren't these Sunset Country lake trout some of the most beautiful fish you have ever seen?  They are suckers for a white tube, like this new Impulse Tube.  They have a slender profile, which I like. Gonna be a great smallmouth bait this summer as well.  These are some of the toughest fighting fish there are in fresh water.

Here is my pal Eric Naig, from Northland Fishing Tackle with a nice lake trout that he caught on recent trip up the the Kenora area in March.  He caught it on a new upgraded model of the Puppet Minnow that will be available to anglers in late 2014/2015.  Better paint jobs, better hooks, going to be a great bait!

The times that I have been out fishing for pike, the action has been pretty good!  My buddy Jay Samsal took me into a remote back lake back in March and we had a great day catching big pike and walleyes out of the same holes.  It was awesome!  We got a great TV show recorded as well - fishing with tip-ups.

Speaking of walleyes, here is Samsal with a big one that he caught on the same trip.  It was pretty cool, these were all shallow water fish in 8 feet of water or less...one of those lakes that you can only fly into during the summer.  We were able to access with snowmobiles on this trip.

There is still plenty of ice on our lakes and I'm afraid we're looking at a mid-May ice out...Walleye season is closed now but there are still great bites to be had for crappie, lake trout, whitefish and pike!
