Busy, busy, busy...

Fishing season is here!  I've been staying busy the past few weeks with a few guide trips and some bass tournaments on the weekends.  Last week my buddy Caleb Colwell and I took 2nd at the Lake Despair Castin' For Cash tournament.  We caught our smallmouths on a variety of baits, including a X-Rap jerkbaits and topwater poppers, and Northland Impulse soft baits.

This past weekend, Chris Savage and I took 5th at the Shoal Lake Big Bass Classic, which wasn't to bad.  We made a few decisions that looking back we shouldn't have made and that's the way it goes.  The good news was that my Dad and his buddy Dean Smith won the tournament, so that was cool!

Savy with one of our fish on day two - a nice smallmouth.  Caught on a 4" Northland Impulse Smelt Minnow

Savy with a baby musky we had to get a photo of...

Jay Samsal and Scott Dingwall with their big day-two limit - 18.32 pounds.

Ryan Sharpe and his little guy Maverick with a walleye from Lake of the Woods in early July

Andrew Fortune with a big walleye he caught on Lake of the Woods in early July...his biggest ever at the time!

Tournament results from Lake Despair can be found at www.lakedespairlodge.com.  Shoal Lake doesn't have a website.

This weekend we have a tournament in Kenora - the Bronzeback Classic (www.bronzebackclassic.ca), then the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship next week on Rainy Lake (www.canadianbass.com)

The Klaassen's fishing trip on Lake of the Woods

I spent the past couple of days in the boat with Paul and Val Klaassen from Lloydminster, Alberta.  Despite some high winds for a couple of days, we caught a bunch of fish and had a good time!

Paul's first nice pike of the trip.  Caught on a Rapala X-Rap.

Val, with one of her nice pike

Paul, with a big smallmouth

Paul caught more bass on the trip, Val caught more pike....

Fishing on Lake of the Woods

Last week I was able to spend a few days on the water with one of the owner's of B.A.S.S., Don Logan from Alabama and his friend Tom Curl from Wisonsin.  We spent three days fishing on Lake of the Woods and caught some nice bass, pike and walleyes, despite some tough weather.  Had a great time!

Big cats and more...

The past couple of weeks have kept me busy...doing some guiding, filming some TV segments for Fishing with Gussy and fishing some tournaments.

My brother Ben and I took 2nd at the Manitoba Bass Anglers Westhawk tournament on June 9.  We also had big bass of the day at 3.10 pounds.  We had fun fishing together!  Caught fish on small suspending jerkbaits (#8 X-Raps) and drop-shotting small plastics (Impulse leeches).

Also fished the Shaw Dryden Walleye Masters tournament this past weekend at Wabigoon Lake with my buddy Troy Norman.  We had a fun weekend but we failed to catch some big fish to be competitive in the tournament.  This is a well-run event at a great lake for a big tournament.  You can find full results at www.drydenwalleyemasters.ca

Here was one of the big catfish we caught filming the TV segment.  This was a big fish, over 20 pounds.  We were fishing the Red River in Manitoba.

My pal Jason Gauthier, who I fished with on the Red with a large drum.  We caught several of these as well.

Brock and Rachelle Sproule with a nice pike from Shoal Lake.
